History of Public Health in Ukraine |
 Public Health in Ukraine has its old-standing and interesting history. Last time new details of formation and development of the system for the management of public health are opening for wide readers' circles.
In 1917-1919 one could observe a rather complicated military political situation in Ukraine. It reflected changes determined by the struggle for power between the provisional Government and Ukrainian Central Rada (UCR); between the UCR and the Soviet power; between the Soviet power and the Government of hetman Skoropadsky, then Directoria, Denikin’s Voluntary Army and foreign occupation troops. Power in Ukraine passed repeatedly from one political group to another and was often characterized by such political phenomenon as dual power. At that time the Public Health System management determined as an attempt of regeneration of Ukrainian state system in the newest history of Ukraine was characterized by its own peculiarities. The first period was the period of government of Ukrainian Central Rada (Council) (March 17, 1917-April 29, 1918). Formation of the Central Rada state structures repeated at first the actions of the Provisional Government in Russia which announced Central Medical Council the higher, medical-administrative body. The Local Medical-Sanitary Council was created in Kyiv respectively.

SSML is one the largest branch libraries of Europe, scientific - and -research institution on the issues of medical bibliography, librarian science, history of medical books. Organisation - and - methodical and consulting center for 998 medical libraries.
Nowadays the Library funds make up over 1,3 mln. different editions: of the autors of the XVI - XVIII- th centuries to the most complete editions in 35 languages.

UKRMED Directory is a private, noncommercial project, created on the beginning of 1999 in order to collect, organize and help in searching medical sites and health related web resources in Ukrainian Internet. Later on, because of rapid evolution of Internet in Ukraine, structure and possibilities of the Directory on that time failed to satisfy more and more increasing demands. That is why at the beginning of 2001 UKRMED Directory has been restructured and new database of medical sites has been designed on its basis.
